Dexter Malcolm Byrne is a 35 year old telekinetic psychic and bank robber, the oldest of four Byrne gingers and the self-appointed protector of them all. With a dual-faced personality, it is far better to be on his good side than his bad, and refrain from putting his younger siblings in danger if you want to continue living. If threatened, he will fight back, if they're threatened, he'll do his best to utterly destroy you and those around you.
Physical Description
Like all Byrne offspring, Dex is a ginger, albeit the blondest of the four. Pale skin, reddish hair, clear blue eyes, a sprinkling of freckles, he could very well lead the charge in the Ginger Rebellion in taking over the world. The tallest (thus far, Liam looks like he might outstrip him soon, and Ryan's just an inch shy of him) of the four Byrnes at an even six foot, Dex is muscular without being too bulky and hindering escapes when they are needed.
His dress changes per job, depending on what's needed, but with laying low at hand, he's gone to ground as an everyman in jeans and tees. Nothing that sticks out besides cheery or snarky statements emblazoned across his chest. In his own element, it's black shirts, layered over longer white shirts. [top]
Personality
Dex's personality is really two fold, the public and the private.
The public's always changing, it depends on the situation at hand, but as they're lying low for awhile, he's playing the role of charming, goofy and rather harmless guy. But it isn't some flimsy little lie, an ultra thin veneer, no. Dex is able to slide completely into the role, until he nearly believes it himself. He's happy to help, quick to joke, and a family man.
The private carries the shade of the public, as it is only his true personality's tiny facets magnified a hundred times. But really, he's dark, cunning and can carry little conscience. That he restrains from kills has less to do with him not wanting to harm others, as much as him not wanting to bring heat down upon them (no comments Ryan). Jobsshould not be messy, although they occasionally (read: often) are. He loves his family more than anything, and is fiercely protective of them, trying to be the stabilizing force among the differing personalities.
The kids (Bonnie and Liam) are always to be protected, Ryan's got to be kept calm (if possible), when he's ready to go off. [top]
Strengths
- Family - As much as they are his weakness, the place to hit to really hurt/anger him, they are just as much his strength. He trusts them with his life, and knows that they would do anything for him as much as he would do the same for them.
- Level Head - Dex does not have the patience of a saint, but he's better able to bank his anger for later, to keep his head under stress and fire. Later he will work through his anger in other ways, but when Ryan's about to walk into a hail of bullets, Dex is there to pull him back. Sometimes even using his abilities to divert the bullets away from hitting the younger ones.
- Cunning - He's not as goofy as you might think from first glance. He's cunning, smart and can be ruthless when the need calls for it.
- Conscience - Dexter Byrne lacks any real sort of conscience, at least by society's standards. He avoids killing, especially cops, as much as possible because it makes more trouble than it's worth most of the time. However, he refuses to kill or harm children, no matter what he does. Let alone animals. Humans can be killed, but leave the kittens alone.
Weaknesses
- Family - The only thing that really matters, his younger siblings. His first instinct is always to protect them, to hurt those who have hurt them. When their father was killed, it was not even a question that he and Ryan would track down the man who had taken him out, that they would tear him apart. Nothing mattered but revenging their father.
- Control - Maybe not in the traditional sense, but Dex needs to have some sort of control over his surroundings. He's the leader, he tries to keep them all somewhat in line, and he likes planning in the bank jobs they pull.
- Need - Dex needs to be needed. He won't admit it, exactly, but he needs his family to be able to (and want to) turn to him for anything from leadership to bailing them out of jail when someone gets caught.
- Anger - The eldest Byrne's anger is not broadcasted so plainly or quickly as the younger members of their family, but its there, simply slower to build and heavily banked. However, when it is severely provoked, or grows to be too much, it breaks with a burning fury.
Special Skills/Abilities
Cracking safes, lockpicking - Dex uses his TK to slide the locking mechanisms out of place and into unlocked settings, no matter how complicated the mechanism is. Although he likely could do it from dozen feet away, he likes to get up close and personal with the safes he cracks, placing his fingers on the door.
Fighting Skills - More brawling and messy than flawless and artistic, it still gets the job done to defend himself and disarm his opponent.
Weapons - Although it would be nice for bank robberies to go smoothly, no weapons ever used, there are times when you need yourself a gun or knives. Dex can use a gun and use it well, but he prefers knives. Mostly because he can use his telekinesis to direct them in a throw through the air to find their marks in flesh and throats. [top]
History
Before the Light of May
Dexter 'Dex' Byrne was born the first, the first son, of four children to Roisin and Ronan Byrne. The former was a groupie turned roadie for Kiss, while the latter was their pyrotechnic 'guy' (as well as a fire elemental). Until Dex was fourteen, it had been just him and his little brother Ryan, the hot-headed little kid who never strayed from his side, and the two of them spent the majority of their formative years on tour, in a very gypsy-like raising. This was far from a settled environment to be born into, and by the time Roisin and Ronan settled down, Dex was still left without really feeling connected to any one place.
The oldest Byrne child was already getting into some trouble by the time that Bonnie James came along, trying his hand at pick pocketing, while Ryan was more prone to getting into fights. Even as a pre-teen, the second oldest was known for schoolyard brawls with kids older than he. Dex admitted to having wanted another brother if his parents decided to suddenly thrust a younger sibling on them, but the little girl quickly had her brothers wrapped around her tiny fingers. Even if they still called Bonnie their brother.
A year later and they got Liam, by which time Dex and Ryan were far more active in their minor criminal enterprises. For Dex it was not just some sort of kleptomania, or a way to rebel (although it was partly to rebel just a little), but more of a challenge and a rush. Could they pull off the minor crimes and not get caught? The fact that they were something other than just teenage boys made it easy, and the crimes only grew in complexity and value. Telekinesis could do wonders for two young criminals in the making.
By the time the eldest was twenty one, and Ryan was nineteen, they were branching out into more serious offenses, and it seemed like a breeze. The 'regular' humans just could not account for the odd happenings that left them that less wealthy. Money was either blown, or slipped to their parents when they were not paying attention, although Dex did think enough to save a portion of his share from their growing endeavors. Tragedy hit them then, and hit them hard, when their mother was killed in a motorcycle accident. It was a stunning blow, and the two older Byrne sons were sure to be found around their family, and with their father who never quite recovered from the loss of his wife.
Bonnie had not even been seven when they lost their mom, Liam not even six. Explaining that some stupid accident had taken away their mother had been difficult, to say the least.
Ryan got popped a couple times for some scrap or another, with Dex immediately going and bailing him back out. Trying to help out with the two littler siblings, who were still in elementary school through the tumultous times.
Five years after Roisin's accident, some street thug asshole trying to make either a name for himself or just a quick buck, killed their father Ronan during a mugging. Keeping their heads long enough to make it through the funeral then had been nearly impossible, even for the usually level-headed Dex. There had been no one to blame for what happened to Mom, but Dad? The cops had not exactly had much to go on, and no one really wanted to talk to them anyway, but some poking around and choice words and promises spread around garnered them the information they needed to identify their father's killer. It was information they could have passed onto the police, but the Byrne brothers had had a different goal in mind.
They left Bonnie in charge for the night, with strict rules about locking the doors and not letting anyone in but them after dark. That was when they went out for blood.
Dex and Ryan found the man who had taken their father away from them, and took him apart.
After that, Bonnie simply would not let up about joining them in the illegal activities Dex certainly never told her about. Then again, they did not exactly hide it. Still doing pretty petty crimes, but with the potential to do far more, they had to simultaneously contend with competing criminals, making sure the younger two stayed in school (Dex wanted them to at least get their high school degrees), and Bonnie pulling more and more shit to get them to agree with her assessment that she should join them. Finally, they folded, deciding that if she was going to be a criminal like them, she might as well learn what they knew, and be close enough that they could watch out for her.
Inducting Liam in soon after was more to stem off any more crap like that being pulled.
Between the four of them, they moved into bank jobs, easily able to outwit those with only human abilities. If they could see the layout of the vault before they got in, if they could unlock the safe with a few seconds of thought, not to mention the bonuses of controlling light and fire, there seemed to be little stopping them. The Byrne Brothers (including the one with boobs, as they referred to Bonnie) pulled a job not long ago that netted them quite the cushy payload, but it seemed like time to lay low for awhile. Especially with the crap fest of the Light of May cropping up. [top]
After the Light of May
Dex hates it. Before, people just had not been out on the lookout for those with supernatural abilities to be breaking the law, to be robbing banks and ripping off the occasional rich person. C'mon, they're victimless crimes. But now corporations and banks would likely try to build up supernatural guards to stop them, block them from just waltzing in and taking what they wanted. [top]
Psychic - Telekinesis
On the job Dex is a telekinetic psychic with extreme control over his abilities.
Psychics are simply people with psychic abilities. Like elementals, no one is really sure how some people are simply born with these abilities, but they are. It's more random than an elemental being born, and psychics are rarely born in the same generation of a family. It does have a tendency to skip generations, however (example: if you're a telepath, there's a chance one of your grandchildren or great-grandchildren will inherit the ability).
There is another way that psychic abilities manifest themselves. Sometimes they appear after severe head trauma. Some scientists theorize that we all have psychic potential, and it's just a matter of unlocking it.
The drawback to being a psychic is that you can't turn off your abilities. Insanity runs high in psychics because of it, though there is hope this won't be the case for future generations, now that they are more socially accepted since the light of May..
Powers:
Telekinesis
A telekinetic using their mind to move matter. It takes years of training to have the mental strength to lift and move large, heavy objects (like, say, a car), but it's still a very useful ability. The problem is that sometimes focusing too hard on an object can have negative consequences - like blowing it up. Young telekinetics often find objects around them breaking at randomly at times of extreme negative emotion, and they have to learn control as they get older. Some telekinetics can also make sparks, electricity, or flashes of light.

A modest and unassuming (and extremely fireproofed) house. Dex has stashed fire extinguishers all around the place, because he cannot simply summon and extinguish fires by sheer force of mind alone, although he can use his highly developed telekinesis to manipulate objects around him.
